Do the chairs have arms?

No. All six are armless, which is the reason they slide fully under the table. If you want armrests at the head of the table this is not the set for it.

Can I use it without the cushions?

Yes. The seat underneath is slatted acacia, and the manufacturer presents the cushions as removable for different needs. Without them you sit 1.5 in to 2 in lower.

What upkeep does the wood need?

The manufacturer asks for wood oil on the surface regularly and says to avoid leaving the set out in the rain. Neither the oil nor a cover comes with the order, so budget for both if the set will live outside.

Will a standard patio umbrella fit the hole?

The hole is 1.97 in across, which suits the common 1.9 in market pole. Measure your pole before ordering, and remember a base is needed because the hole alone does not hold an umbrella upright.
