A raised container has air on every side. In a July heatwave the soil can go from damp to bone dry between one evening and the next.
A reservoir under the soil
A perforated disk sits over a water storage plate. Water collects below and travels back up to the roots as the soil dries out.
Each box builds from a base plate, four side panels and the posts that slot into their grooves, with a nut cap on top of each column. Nothing needs a tool. A plug in each side wall lets you drain the reserve or hold it in.
Every part laid out
Each box is 16 inches square with 7 inches of soil depth, standing 17.5 inches tall once the legs are on. The parts list is printed alongside.
How the water part works
Water passes through the disk into the plate below. Leave the plugs in and the reserve stays. Pull one and the excess runs out.
Six steps, no tools
Lay the base, drop the walls in, slide the columns down the grooves, cap them, fit the plugs. The legs are the last step and they are optional.
