How much shade does it actually throw?

The manufacturer quotes 135 square feet across the two canopies. For comparison, the table underneath takes up about 19 square feet, so there is cover well past the chairs on both sides at midday and useful cover at an angle later on.

What is the vent at the top for?

Hot air rises and collects under a solid canopy. The vent at each crown lets it out, which keeps the space under the umbrella cooler and gives a gust somewhere to go instead of lifting the fabric.
