The backrest has four named positions and each one changes the shape of the furniture. Upright it is a 48.5 in loveseat, 28.5 in deep. Fully flat it is 44 in deep and 14 in high, and with the ottoman in front it becomes a bed for one without anything being carried anywhere.

The four positions
Sit up, recline, lying down, fully lay flat. Each is a stop on the bracket behind the back rather than a setting you hold in place, so it stays where you put it once somebody leans back into it.
What that does to the footprint
Upright it is 28.5 in deep and 35 in tall. Fully flat it is 44 in deep and 14 in tall. The 48.5 in width never changes, and the ottoman adds 42.5 in when it is pulled in front.
